Sabbatical

March 2nd, 2008 · Comments Off

As much as I enjoy sharing my opinions on America and the issues Americans face, I must take a sabbatical from American Flag Waver. Things are just too hectic in my life at the moment. Hopefully, by the time summer arrives, I’ll have more time to devote to this blog. Thanks to all of the subscribers and lurkers. I hope you’ll check back so we can converse again in the future.

No Hillary 2008 (Multi-edition)

February 13th, 2008 · Comments Off

BlogCarnival.com is still creating problems for me; I’ve been unable to access even though the server finds my ip and is able to ping me. As a result, starting March 1, 2008 the No Hillary Carnival will no longer accept submissions via blog carnival. I’ll try to set up another method for submissions.

I’ve also had no time to check out each link, but there are many returning blog authors so I’m confident you’ll find some great articles. I’ll get around to visiting everyone soon.

Checking In…

February 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Sorry that I haven’t been posting recently; things have gotten hectic with school and migraines. Ugh. I’ve also been unable to access the Blog Carnival site; that’s why I didn’t post the No Hillary carnival. Unless the powers that be (for that website, at least) don’t figure out what the problem is soon, the carnival will be cancelled altogether. Hopefully, I’ll get things under control soon and will be back to posting regularly.

Direct Taxation: an anniversary

January 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

January 24, 1916
Top court defends federal income tax

Although the Constitution explicitly forbade direct taxation of citizens, the United States flirted with the notion of an income tax during the latter half of the nineteenth century. In fact, the government briefly instituted a tax during the Civil War. This tax was repealed in 1872, but legislators, casting about for ways to raise federal funds, continued to push for an income tax. Congress gave the green light to a income tax bill in 1894, only to watch as the Supreme Court deemed the tax unconstitutional on the grounds that it failed to raise revenues that were commensurate with the various populations of America’s states. Undeterred, Congress passed the Sixteenth Amendment in 1909 that, after state ratification in 1913, effectively granted the federal government constitutional authority to levy an income tax. Again, the legislation was taken before the Supreme Court for review. On January 24, 1916, the Court handed down a decision that no doubt still causes some Americans deep anguish, ruling in favor of the amendment and paving the way for the federal income tax. Source

What can I say about the preceding? It’s a day of mourning. I support repealing the federal income tax, but don’t see the government going along with me on the issue.

Ahmadinejad Spanked Like an Errant Child by Ayatollah

January 23rd, 2008 · Comments Off

Not literally, of course. Though only figurative it’s still quite satisfying to behold. There are so many cliches running through my mind that I fear this post will be filled with them. I’ll endeavor to resist.

Ahmadinejad was elected to power on the platform that promised “oil revenues to every family,” eradication of poverty and fighting unemployment. Not only has he failed to distribute revenues of the countries abundant natural resource, he refused to supply gas to villages being hit by the worst winter in years. Fortunately for the common folks of Iran, the Ayatollah is looking out for them.

“In response to a request by the conservative-dominated parliament, Khamenei ordered the president to implement a law spending $1 billion from the Currency Reserve Fund to supply gas to villages after he balked for budgetary reasons.”

Both reformists and conservatives are increasingly dissatisfied with Ahmadinejad’s performance as president. Many have worried that he “has concentrated too much on fiery, anti-U.S. speeches and not enough on the economy.” What do you expect from a power hungry ego maniac. It serves him right to find himself humiliated. Unfortunately, it will probably make him more desperate to come out on top of the power struggle. Maybe Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should increase his personal guard.
